Final Projects

Choose One Project from the three below to be your final Design Project.

Make sure to read and follow all instructions.

#1 Endangered Species Poster (Photo Ark)

Photo Ark Project

A tribute to the endangered Species on Planet Earth.

National Geographic’s Joel Sartore has spent the last 15 years documenting the planets endangered species. 12,476 animals have been photographed and documented and there are still many more.

This is a powerful statement and journey that Joel is very passionate about. His mission is to bring these images to the world to try to get people to care about every creature. To show that big or small, we all have the right to exist on the planet.

Your design challenge is:

Once we watch the short documentary, take some time to explore the “Ark” learn about some of the animals, find one that “speaks to you”, that you find interesting and do some research on it.

Once you have chosen your animal, find out where it is from, how many are left, what kind of creature is it (bird, fish, mammal, reptile, insect, etc.) what are the underlying reasons for its being on the endangered species list? Get a good understanding of the animal you choose. Remember part of being a good designer is the ability to be empathetic.

Your design project is to create a Poster that promotes the animal. One that brings information about the animal to people who may not know anything about it. Somewhere on the poster you need to bring attention to the fact that this is an endangered species, how many are left and any information that can tell a brief story about where they are from and why they are special.

Joel Sartore believes that “people will only save what they love and they wont love it if they’ve never even met it.”

How can people get to know the animal on your poster?

#2 Beverage Label

Section 1:

1st – Designing a company:

  • - Design a logo for the company making the product.
  • - You will be designing a label for a 2 liquid beverages.
  • - Have them relate to each other, (like two flavors of Snapple).
  • - Design a label including UPC (The Universal Product Code (UPC) is a barcode)
  • - Include all ingredients nutritional information, recycling, fluid oz, calories, company name (manufacturing information) and any other pertinent information that pertains to the product.
  • - The idea behind this is to make it marketable (something that could actually sell). The concept can be completely outrageous but made to look realistic. Example; "Hedgehog Sweat" pure refreshing sweat extracted from the majestic New Zealand hedgehog. (tagline; "Hydrate with a spike of citrus flavor".)
  • - Think about what kinds of drinks are out there, what makes them innovative, interesting and something you would want to drink. (No Alcohol)
  • You must have a dozen (12) or more sketches in your sketchbook before you begin on the computer.

Materials needed:

You must find a bottle or can and bring in into class. You will

need to measure the surface that your label will cover,

diameter and height.  (The average bottle label is 4.5in x 8.5in)

Concept:

Have a clear concise and imaginative idea and go with it.

Think about color schemes, symbols and design concepts

that will best enhance your product. Determine if the label

will be solid color or transparent or have any cut out sections to it.

Marketing Information:

  • Name of Beverage: _
  • Type of Beverage (flavor):
  • Special ingredients or what makes this beverage                               different or special?
  • How did you come up with the name of the beverage?
  • Why is it you think this will appeal to buyers?
  • What is your “target audience”?
  • What type of marketing cost will you have for your two ads?                  (you can find this information on the internet) LINK
  • Why will your advertising reach your target audience?

This must be original, do not copy any other product names or

designs.

The labels will be uploaded to a mockup.

All the information that you would expect to find on a “real” product

must be on your label.

Look at a “real" bottle label and see what is there

(nutrition info., bar code, ingredients, manufacturer, is it recyclable?,

etc.)

Make it look real!

Example Label:

Section 2

The second half of the assignment is to promote

your product.

Advertising

Take the Marketing Plan and design or create the types of

advertisements you will use. Use your sketchbook!

Must have at least one advertisement. These are open to

your creativity.

Perhaps you could team up with a film student to create a

real commercial !?

You can use Illustrator / Vectornator or Photoshop or Both.

Section 3:

Product Placement

Now that you have created your advertisements you need to place that advertisement into a real life situation using Photoshop.

Here is an example:

#3 Upscale Junk Food

Think of your favorite "Junk Food" and think about how it has been packaged. Bright colors, silly characters, explosive text, etc.

This design sense has been thought out with specific intent. To capture the audiences attention and to try and make this food desirable to the average consumer.

Americans are inundated with thousands of different types of "junk food" on supermarket shelves, it is impossible to escape!

Well, your task is to take one of these "junk food" products and re package them for a more upscale client or consumer.

A Gourmet Rebrand!

How can you reimagine some of America's most famous snacks as fancy gourmet food?

Do your research; find that perfect product and break it down. What are the essential aspects of it that you can use to re-brand it?

If you can gather a sample of your snack; if not find a sample online that will provide all of the important information.

The initial design should be sketched out in your sketchbook. Draw several variations so that you have choice between the best.

This project will require you to re create packaging (like your logo design) with using mock ups and Photoshop once you have created your design in Illustrator.

Depending on the type of packaging we may be able to produce a real mockup for your product. This should be taken into consideration as you are designing your new upscaled packaging.

What to post in your portfolio:

Sample of "real" junk food, all prep work ideas, sketches, final logo and final mockup.

Explanation as to why you designed the re package like you did.
